Ownership of a Bearded Dragon should be fun, to extend the longevity of this the below points should be considered.

Do's of Bearded Dragon ownership

  1. Purchase a book and use the Internet for research prior to bringing home a Bearded Dragon
  2. Purchase the biggest and/or most alert of those on offer and not the smallest
  3. Find a reptile vet then if anything happens you can get prompt treatment
  4. Replace uv tubes every six months to maintain maximum strength
  5. Ensure your Bearded Dragon can get within ten inches of the uv tube
  6. Offer water, if they won't drink it they may use it to cool themselves down. Change any water daily
  7. Offer your feeder insects a healthy diet, as your Bearded Dragon is what he/she eats.
  8. Supplement your feeder insects with calcium every other day for juveniles and every third day for adults
  9. Consider putting your feeder insects in a bowl, as then they cannot hide
  10. Consider providing a hide box where your Bearded Dragon can sleep or retreat to. Place this away from the heat source
  11. Secure all fixings so your Bearded Dragon cannot dislodge them and harm themself

Dont's of Bearded Dragon ownership

  1. Feed fireflies these are deadly
  2. Feed crickets or other items larger than gap between your Beardies eyes, doing so can cause impaction & even death
  3. Feed mealworms to Bearded Dragons under one year old, if unavoidable only feed them the small white molten 'soft' ones
  4. Feed waxworms more than twice a week, as these are high in fat
  5. Feed your Beardie less than two hours before lights out - this is to allow for digestion of food
  6. Feed insects from outside as these may have come into contact with pesticides
  7. Use calci-sand as a substrate this can cause impaction and even death. Use washed play sand this is also cheaper
  8. Leave live food especially crickets in the vivarium overnight as they will cause stress and will nibble on your Bearded Dragon
  9. Over clutter your vivarium as crickets will hide if they can
  10. House two males together as they will more than likely fight over basking/sleeping areas
  11. Hold your Bearded Dragon with his/her arms hanging in the air, as they like to feel secure
  12. Pull your Bearded Dragons tail, they cannot grow a new one
